Watchmen I was worried that this would not live up to the hype. [livejournal.com profile] gin200168 and I watched the Motion Comic - to prep for the movie and I got bored on chap 3/12 and left. She fell asleep in chap 9.  It had really mixed reviews and I was worried about the rape, violence and blood.  Yes, I had to cover my eyes 3 or 4 times at the violence and blood. The rape, was not really a rape, a suggestion of rape (but pretty violent). It was funny and horrifying. It was detailed and layered.  The music selections just seemed wrong. I loved all the songs, but cept for one they seemed really out of place and clunky.  The beginning was just amazing, the title credits were mesmerizing.  The ending satisfying, but not really all that happy.  Oh and we have blue penis', all the time. More blue penis' then breasts in the movie, that has to say something. (big grin). Everyone was terrific in their roles. I really liked Billy Crudup as Doctor Manhattan, he had a detached otherworldly presence that really worked so well.  He was serene and haunted.  Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach was just terrific, the anger and pain so evident. You wanted to feel bad for him, but you also wanted to bitch slap him into tomorrow.  I am betting there is a director's cut of this and I would happily sit through another 20-40 mins of this universe. Not a place I would ever want to live in, but a place that serves as a haunting warning to us all.

I have to add that when you watch the movie, there is sooo much to see, even things in the background serve to advance the story, it is awesome.

Rating:  10. MUST OWN DVD
Scruff meter - Like WHOA.. there is scruff dolled out all around.  Only Dr Manhattan and Ozymandias remained scruff free.

oh and there was a moment of total suit porn.. I think I visibly quaking for a few moments. It was a nice suit and Adrian Veidt/Ozymandias moved so well in it. *shivers* I also think that [livejournal.com profile] gin200168 laughed at me.

Sunshine Cleaning Cute and sad movie. I thought they had a lot of potential to have a huge impact, but much of the movie lacked energy to get from scene to scene. Everyone preformed well and were likable enough, but somehow I felt cheated at the end. It had an ending, but the ending felt more of an intermission. I think it could have been stronger emotionally. Yes, I know I cried, but something felt not quite right.   A good indy, if you liked Little Miss Sunshine, then you will dig this movie.  It lets you draw lots of your own conclusions as to where things end, which is nice to an extent, but I needed more.

Lots of scruff

Her Minor Thing  Estella Warren is Jenna a 25 year old virgin whose boyfriend, vainly played by Michael Weatherly (go Tony) outs her on accident. Thus we begin the romcom ride. Christiam Kane also plays a significant as the burned but sensitive photographer.  Well... this crashed my TIVO 2x.. so I am going to need to finish it some day :(
**Update: Finally saw the entire movie. It is fairly predictable, it did get me to second guess myself more then once. Christian is adorable and Michael is Tony. It is a cute movie to watch with friends.

MONSTERS VS ALIENS  Honestly, I did not recognize who was doing the voices initially. I did figure out Reese Witherspoon  as Susan and Hugh Laurie as Dr Cockroach.  I only knew that Stephan Colbert was the President based on the credits. I totally was stumped on Seth Rogan, Will Arnett, Keifer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Paul Rudd, Jeffery Tambor, Amy Phehler, Renee Zellweger and John Krasinski. (and OMG Tom McGrath as WILSON.. *sigh*)   It is certainly a huge known cast, and the voice acting wall all funny. the lines were witty and the movie in the first 30 minutes was visually stunning  (the use of 3d seemed to decrease as the movie went on). The story was kinda weak and very contrived and not always in a good way.  I think the critics will pan it in a bad way. It does not have the big squishy heart that really makes cartoon movies.  The aliens were not really threatening, maybe I have watched too much Doctor Who.  I thought it was a fun ride and visually it was nice, but it did not have the soft center that I love in a movie.

Scruff: A tiny bit to start the show and then smooth sailing throught the rest.

24 Nights I soooo wanted to like this very low budget movie. Honestly, I am not sure why I did not love it to pieces. I just think a remake would be better.. yeah I'm weird.  Kevin Isola (who apparently is in Damages, a show I need to watch at somepoint) stars as Jonathan, a 20 something boy whose parents are dead and lives with his harpy of a sister who is married to a low budget underwear model. Jonathan still believes in Santa. For Christmas he writes 2 letters, one to Santa asking for the perfect boy. Jonathan works at a gay bookstore and suddenly the cutest boy ever (who has an older b/f starts working there). It does not play out exactly they way you expect. The actors were okay- nothing amazing. The script had potential, but was a little uneven.  It was no budget movie. But I think if there were to change the sister a little and killed out a sub-plot while developing other ones that is could be a really good movie. Hence my desire for a remake.  It is a feel good movie and uses Santa well throughout the entire movie, but something was missing.

Thomas Kinkade's Home for Christmas  The cast was surprising (Jared Padalecki, Marcia Gay Harden, Peter O'Toole, Richard Burgi, Richard Moll, Charlotte Rae, Ed Asner, Malcom Stewart,  and Chris Elliott) The script was bad- it just seemed to skim the surface of emotions and never really got to anything you could sink your teeth into.  The story of how Thomas Kinkade got his light on was a sweet story, but it felt half way told. It was cool to see Placerville.  There was a fun cast of characters but you never got anything beyond just a glimpse of them.  I thought Peter O'Toole gave a fantastic performance but[livejournal.com profile] evila_elf was creeped out by him.
No Scruff at all
Rating:  4. I only watched it for  ([livejournal.com profile] evila_elf) Jared Padalecki and it was meh

Arranged Zoe Lister Jones and Francis Benhamou star as Rochel and Nasira as a Jewish and a Muslim women working in the Brooklyn school district together and preparing for arranged marriages. They both find they have more in common with each other then they do with the other teachers. It is a nice movie about people from different cultures that find similarities with their lives.
Rating:  5. I would recommend this on a case by case basis

Broken English Parker Posey stars in this very independent movie about a single girl who is not happy at all and feels like she needs to find a man. All of her friends are in great relationships and she wants one too. It is well acted and very dry- the scenes feel raw. It is fairly predictable, but I could really relate to Parker's performance of a girl who is getting older and still finds herself alone and wants to not be lonely anymore.
Scruff: Lots more then Hugh but less then Grizley
Rating:  5. I would recommend this on a case by case basis

Patrik 1,5  What a wonderful movie.  Goran and Sven are really happy, married and living in a brightly colored suburb.  Goran wants nothing more then a baby to raise. Sven is not so sure, he has a daughter from a past marriage.  They get word that they have been granted a child, Patrik age 1,5. They read it as One and a half, but it is a typo, and Patrik is a 15 year old homophobe who has lived his life in institution.  It is not a match made in heaven. This cinematography is outstanding.  Goran and Sven's relationship is beautifully portrayed. There is plenty of angst stuffed around the corners as well. This is a great movie, totally recommend it.

The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy  The best part about this movie is is seeing all the people who are known names now.  It was awesome... I gasped more then once.  Zach Braff with blond spiky hair (it is awesome), Dean Cain, John Mahoney, Mary McCormack, Andrew Keegan (as a really quiet guy- very different from Latter Days), Jennifer Coolidge, Kerr Smith, Christian Kane (as a gym bunny looking hot with short hair) It was directed by the Weitz brothers.  It is a "day in the life" or in this case 6 or 7 months in the life of  a group of gay men who hang out at a bar and play softball together, as they all wander though love and loss. Pretty predictable, but well acted and a decent script.
No scruff (w00t)

The Trip Billed as a romantic comedy this movie covers a long time span  of the relationship between Alan and Tommy. Alan a Republican and Tommy an activist meet and much to Alan's surprise fall in love. It all goes terrible wrong and then Alan needs to make it right.  UGH more angst then I like and in some ways a bit superficial, I would have liked a little more depth to the love story, then ending broke me. The wigs were terrible.. just horrible.
Scruff- none

Summer Storm (Sommersturm) German movie about 2 best friends at summer rowing camp. This is a beautifully shot movie and has a lovely story. It includes one of the most beautiful first kisses I have ever seen. Set on a dock at sunset, it is sad and happy and touching and gentle- shot without sound, just the light breathing from the 2 guys. There is also a well constructed heterosexual sex scene that is set against a storm. The movie wraps up kinda, I would have liked a little bit more in the ending, but it was a really enjoyable movie. It was beautifully filmed.

That Man: Peter Berlin  Peter Berlin, porn star, model, icon from the 70's. This is a documentary on his life and errr rise to fame. He is still alive and kicking in San Francisco and narrates part of the movie. It is really well done  explores his life  they way it was and how influential his image is.. probably still today. His apartment is decorated with pictures of himself and he has a kitty as well.  He in interesting, but in someways I find him really sad. He seems terribly lonely in so many ways.  John Waters is one of the many people who reflect on the character of Peter Berlin and has some funny things to say.
Scruff: none.. but LOTS of skin

Fakers Matthew Rhys (clean shaven thank god, speaking with his native Welsh accent and in need of a sandwich or 2) stars in this 2004 caper. It has HUGE slash potential and that is really the best thing I can say about the movie.  Nick (Rhys) is a punk who owes this guy a lot of money. He develops this relationship with this kid Tony (Tom Chambers), and buys him gifts as a way to , I guess - this is assumption, get with girl Kate (Eve Evans). Tony can draw really well and when he finds an original drawing from an obscure audience the caper to sell the drawing to a bunch of art sellers to get enough money to pay his debt is hatched. You can totally write the rest of the plot from there.  Matthew and Tom have a nice easy chemistry and yeah I thought they would kiss more then once, but alas they were just "friends".

Rating:  4. I only watched it for Matthew Rhys and it was NOT worth it
It was a scruff free movie as well :)

So, I have decided to start to add a rating to my MOTD reports.

The first rating would be on how I would reccomend the movie on a scale of 1-10

10. MUST OWN DVD
 9. Would pick up DVD on Sale
 8. Would Watch again by myself
 7. Would watch again with friends
 6. I would reccomend this to my friends
 5. I would reccomend this on a case by case basis
 4. I only watched it for *name of actor* and it was NOT worth it
 3. I watched it so you don't have to
 2. MEH
 1. KILL ME NOW - I GAVE UP HOW MUCH OF MY LIFE

**ETA Combined 1 and 2, added MEH based on suggestion from [livejournal.com profile] evila_elf

Have any input on that? Some level I am missing?  Should I go back to the last 60 movies and add in the rating or just go on from here ?

Second is the scruff-o-meter. [livejournal.com profile] karaokegal  and I were discussing scruff and the over usage. We are working on a meter reflect the level of scruff in the movies (my last rant should let you know how I feel)

It would be nice to get a 10 point scale here. So far this is the list she provided.
5-Grizzly Adams
4-Hugh Laurie as House
3-Don Johnson as Sonny Crockett
2-Bradley Cooper as Will Tippin
1-Smoothie of your choice

We have agreed that RSL is a good choice for 1 since he should NEVER EVER go without a good clean shave. But what men between 5 and 4 have got their scruff on?  Anyone stand out? and of course we will be needin' pictures.  I will edit this post as people respond.

I Love You Man  I was really ready to hate this movie. Oh let's get this out of the way - WHY CAN'T MEN SHAVE.  Sorry, but yet another movie with scruffy men.  JK (who is made of awesome), Jon Favreau (also really funny) and Rob Hubel (looked very fake tanned) were totally shaven.  Paul Rudd and Jason Segal were both scruffy throughout most of the movie. Paul was clean shaven once or twice and I appreciated each moment.  But of course I digress..   Paul Rudd is Peter Klaven, he is the perfect boyfriend and after he proposes to his girlfriend Zooey (played by Rashida Jones)  he comes to realize (with Zooey's help) that he has ZERO guy friends. With the help of his family and girlfriend he heads out on man dates looking for a guy friend.  He ends up meeting Sydney Fife (Jason Segel) and they become quick friends.  This is a crude comedy and it has a few gross moments, but it has a nice heart and takes a few surprising and refreshing turns on the way to the ending.   The Rush stuff was my favorite and really brought back happy memories from 8th grade.  I have to give them props for taking some chances not following formula but with a huge cast not everyone could be developed and I would have preferred this as a 15  30 min episode mini series, giving time to all the characters to let them each shine.

Two Lovers Joaquin Phoneix is awesome as an emotionally stunted 30 something year old man who lives at home and is still recovering from some sort of breakdown.  His mother, played by Isabella Rossllini, is just amazing as a women who fears for her son and just want him to find  happiness.   Leonard (Phoenix) is torn between the bad (more like emotionally screwed up, then really bad) girl (Gwyneth Paltrow), and the consistent understanding "good" girl Sandra (played by Vinessa Shaw). Every performance is delicate and leaves you with a little pain in your heart.  The movie takes a few obvious turns and the ending is perfect for what the movie is. It is no way happy or sad, just honest and a little sad. This is a good movie- predictable, but okay with fantastic performances making the difference.
